Western Sichuan Autumn 2026: Bipenggou & Mount Siguniang

Published: September 23, 2026  |  Reading time: ~10 min  |  Written by: China Travel editorial team

The short version: The best autumn scenery in China within three hours of a major airport is not in Beijing or Xinjiang — it is in western Sichuan, where Bipenggou ("Little Switzerland") and Mount Siguniang turn gold, copper and snow-white from roughly October 15 to November 10. Both sit in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, both are reachable by direct bus from Chengdu, and a full Bipenggou ticket with the mandatory shuttle is just ¥140. The catch: you must book by passport in advance, and you need a plan for the altitude.

1. Why Western Sichuan Beats Every Other Autumn Trip

Every October, hundreds of thousands of travellers fly to Beijing for ginkgo avenues or to Xinjiang for the Kanas poplars. Both are magnificent, and both are crowded. Meanwhile, a two-lane valley about 200 km northwest of Chengdu quietly delivers something arguably better: alpine lakes, glacier-cut peaks, primeval conifer forest and Tibetan villages, all wrapped in autumn colour and all within a single long weekend.

The region has two headline names. Bipenggou is the easy one — a single deep valley with a bus that carries you to the top so you can walk downhill through the best of it. Mount Siguniang is the ambitious one — four connected peaks (the highest, Yaomei Peak, tops 6,250 m) with three separate valleys for sightseeing, hiking and horse-trekking.

What makes this the right moment: 2026's autumn colour is forecast to peak in a narrow two-week window in mid-to-late October, and the region is still far less known to foreign visitors than Jiuzhaigou next door. Late September is exactly when to book, before Golden Week pricing and holiday crowds hit.

2. Timing: The 2026 Color Calendar

Autumn in the Aba highlands arrives fast. Here is the practical rhythm:

PeriodWhat you getVerdict
Sept 25–27 (Mid-Autumn holiday)Early yellowing, green still dominant, busy domestic weekendSkip — low value
Sept 28 – Oct 7 (National Day / Golden Week)Colour just starting; roads, buses and hotels at maximumAvoid
Oct 15 – Nov 10Golden larch, red birch, snow on the peaks, clear skiesPeak — book this
Nov 11 – Nov 30Leaves down, first heavy snow, quiet and cheapConsolation prize
Dec – MarFull winter: frozen lakes, rime ice, hot springsDifferent trip

The sweet spot for 2026: October 18–28. Golden Week and its "super Golden Week" spillover are done, the leaves are at 90–100%, and hotel rates in Li County and Siguniangshan Town fall back to normal midweek levels. Weekday arrivals (Tuesday–Thursday) are noticeably quieter than weekends.

3. Bipenggou (毕棚沟): Prices, Route and Highlights

Bipenggou sits in Li County at the northern foot of Mount Siguniang. The valley floor starts around 2,015 m and climbs to 3,837 m at its head — high enough to feel thin air, low enough that most healthy travellers cope fine. It is a single route with no backtracking, which is why it works so well on a short trip.

Off-season entry (Nov 16 – Mar 31)¥60Bus still ¥70

Opening hours are 8:00–17:30 with the last entry at 15:30 (this shifts to 15:00 in late autumn — check the day before). Free entry applies to visitors over 65 (bus still payable) and children under 1.2 m; students pay half on the entry ticket.

The route, top to bottom

  1. Longwang Lake (3,112 m) — the first lake you meet; morning mist and fir reflections. The bus stops here on the way up but not on the way down, so get off early if you want it.
  2. Shanghaizi — the transfer hub, where snow peaks reflect in still water.
  3. Bailong Waterfall — a roughly 200 m cascade in the forest, at its best after rain.
  4. Panyang Lake (3,676 m) — the core highlight: a wide mirror lake with snow peaks and a boardwalk circling it.
  5. Swallow Rock (3,837 m) — the road's end, facing the Siguniang massif across meadows and streams.

Two traps. First, the electric shuttle stops running around 17:00 — start early or you will walk the last 4.5 km downhill. Second, food inside the park is limited and expensive; bring water and high-energy snacks.

4. Mount Siguniang (四姑娘山): Three Valleys, One Choice

Mount Siguniang is the larger, wilder sibling. The base town sits at about 3,200 m, which already puts some visitors into mild altitude discomfort — and it only goes up from there. There are three independent valleys, each ticketed separately, and trying to do all three in one visit is a common mistake.

ValleyPeak-season priceStyleWho it is for
Shuangqiao (双桥沟)¥150 (¥80 entry + ¥70 bus)Full sightseeing bus, minimal walkingEveryone — families, older visitors, first-timers
Changping (长坪沟)¥90 (¥70 + ¥20 bus)Light hiking or horseback to forest viewpointsWalkers who want a close view of Yaomei Peak
Haizi (海子沟)¥60Primitive hiking and mountaineering, no busFit, experienced hikers only

Entry runs roughly 7:30–15:00, and on public holidays the whole scenic area caps daily visitors at about 20,000 — once it is full, it is closed for the day.

Pick Shuangqiao first

Shuangqiao is the undeniable crowd-pleaser. The bus runs to the top of the valley and you work back down through viewpoints: Redwood Forest (the highest, deepest point), Potala Peak (a rock face resembling the Potala Palace), Sigunacao Lake with its drowned dead trees and snow reflections, and Nianyu Dam, where a gentle rafting run costs about ¥90. The whole loop takes 4–6 hours without rushing.

Re-entry discount: if you book through the official Aba Tourism Network channel, visiting Shuangqiao first unlocks cheaper rates for a second valley (roughly ¥110 for Shuangqiao, ¥55 for Changping, ¥30 for Haizi). The discount does not apply to cross-platform bookings, so keep everything on one official channel.

Changping for hikers

The shuttle ends at Lama Temple; from there you walk or ride. A relaxed there-and-back to Dead Tree Beach takes 3–4 hours; the deeper push to Muliaozi meadow is a full 6–8 hours and gives the best head-on view of Yaomei Peak. Horse hire is regulated by a single company — the standard fares are about ¥100 to Dead Tree Beach and around ¥320–350 round trip to Muliaozi. Agree the price before mounting.

5. Getting There from Chengdu

Both areas are reached from Chengdu by road; there is no high-speed rail into the mountains.

By public bus

By private car or tour

Driving takes about 3–3.5 hours to Bipenggou via the Rongchang expressway and roughly 175 km to Siguniangshan Town via Yingxiu and the Wolong/Balang Mountain tunnel. In late autumn, carry snow chains and avoid driving after dark — the mountain road is unforgiving. Most foreign visitors without a Chinese licence choose a private driver or a small-group tour, which also removes the language problem at ticket gates.

6. Altitude: The One Thing People Get Wrong

Everything here is above 2,000 m, and Siguniangshan Town sits at 3,200 m. Altitude sickness is the single most common reason a trip goes wrong, and it is largely preventable.

7. Booking Tickets as a Foreigner

Both scenic areas operate a real-name reservation system that runs primarily through Chinese WeChat mini-programs built around the national ID card. Foreign passports need a slightly different route.

Three workable booking paths:

Book 1–3 days ahead in the autumn peak, and earlier for the Golden Week fringe. There is no walk-up ticket counter for foreign visitors at the busiest times.

8. Where to Stay and What to Eat

For Bipenggou, base yourself at the scenic-area entrance or in Gergou Town — several hotels there have hot springs, which is exactly what tired legs want after a day at 3,800 m. For Mount Siguniang, stay in Siguniangshan Town, which puts all three valley entrances within minutes.

Food is Tibetan and Sichuan-Tibetan hybrid, and it is one of the pleasures of the region:

9. Three-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Chengdu to Bipenggou

Leave Chengdu early; arrive at Li County before noon. Afternoon in Bipenggou: bus to Shanghaizi, shuttle or walk to Panyang Lake, then down to Longwang Lake and the waterfall. Dinner and a hot-spring soak; early night.

Day 2 — Mount Siguniang, Shuangqiao Valley

Morning transfer to Siguniangshan Town (about 1.5–2 hours). Check in, then spend the afternoon in Shuangqiao: Redwood Forest, Potala Peak, Sigunacao Lake, Nianyu Dam. Evening on the town viewing platform for alpenglow on the peaks.

Day 3 — Changping Valley, then back

Early entry to Changping Valley; hike to Dead Tree Beach (or ride further to Muliaozi for Yaomei Peak). Return to Chengdu in the afternoon, arriving evening. If you have a fourth day, swap in a stop at Dujiangyan or the Wolong panda base on the way home.

10. Practical Notes and Budget

Payments. Alipay and WeChat Pay both bind international Visa and Mastercard, and QR payment works in the towns. Still carry a little cash — some small vendors and horse handlers are offline.

Connectivity. Mobile signal is patchy-to-absent deep in the valleys. Download offline maps and translation packs before you leave Chengdu.

Indicative 3-day budget per person (excl. flights to Chengdu):

ItemCost
Buses / shared transfer¥250–450
Bipenggou (combo + shuttle)¥140–200
Siguniang (one or two valleys)¥90–240
Hotels (2 nights, mid-range)¥400–800
Meals¥250–400
Total¥1,150–2,100

11. FAQ

Do I need a tour guide to visit Bipenggou and Mount Siguniang?
No. Both are ordinary ticketed scenic areas, not restricted zones. A guide helps mainly with language at gates and transport logistics; independent travellers manage fine with pre-booked tickets.

Can I visit Bipenggou and Mount Siguniang on the same trip?
Yes, and they pair naturally — they are in the same county cluster about 1.5–2 hours apart. Three days is the practical minimum; four is comfortable.

Is the autumn colour worth the altitude discomfort?
For most visitors, yes. Choose Shuangqiao Valley, keep Day 1 light, bring oxygen, and the scenery does the rest.

What is the single biggest mistake first-timers make?
Arriving during Golden Week (Oct 1–7) with no reservation. Shift to October 18–28 and book by passport 1–3 days ahead.
