Qinghai Travel Guide 2026-2027: Xining, Qinghai Lake & Chaka Salt Lake on the Tibetan Plateau

NEW October 16, 2026 · 10 min read · Updated for the 2026-2027 season: Kanbula's autumn peak, the new Xining-Kuala Lumpur route, the Qinghai Lake price review, and what visa-free travellers can and cannot do in Qinghai

Ask a first-time visitor to China where they are going, and you will hear Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an, Chengdu. Ask about Qinghai and you usually get a blank look — even though this one province holds China's largest lake, its most photographed salt flat, the birthplace of Tibetan Buddhism's great reformer, and the start of the railway to Lhasa.

That is changing. Qinghai drew 64.57 million visitors in 2025, up 20.1%, including 115,200 inbound visitors — a 209.1% jump. The province is building itself into an "international ecological tourism destination" (国际生态旅游目的地), added a direct Xining-Kuala Lumpur route in 2026, and saw travel searches climb 210% after the ecological drama Life Tree aired.

Visas, Permits and What Is Off-Limits

Visa-free entry: the simple route

China grants 30-day visa-free entry to ordinary-passport holders of 50 countries (most of the EU, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Canada and others) for tourism and business. The 30 days count from the day after arrival, and visa-free entry lets you travel anywhere open to foreigners — Qinghai included. Most of these arrangements currently run to the end of 2026, so check your embassy notice before booking.

The 240-hour transit trap

The 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit scheme covers 57 nationalities through 65 ports in 24 provincial-level regions, and you must stay inside those designated regions. Qinghai is not one of them. Gansu was added later, with the Lanzhou Zhongchuan and Dunhuang Mogao airports; Qinghai's airports remain outside the programme.

So if you enter on a transit permit at Lanzhou or Dunhuang and then take the train to Xining, you have left your permitted area. Use 30-day visa-free entry or a standard visa instead — see our 240-hour transit guide and visa-free entry guide.

Are parts of Qinghai closed to foreigners?

Everything on a normal itinerary is open: Xining, Qinghai Lake, Chaka, Kumbum, Kanbula, Tongren, Qilian.

Everything on a normal itinerary is open: Xining, Qinghai Lake, Chaka, Kumbum, Kanbula, Qilian. Three exceptions: Jinyintan Atomic City (金银滩原子城, Haibei), closed to foreign nationals; the Lenghu Saishiteng observatory (冷湖赛什腾山, Haixi), restricted; and the Hoh Xil core zone (可可西里, Yushu), closed to everyone for conservation. Remote Yushu and Guoluo trips may need a foreigner’s travel permit (外国人旅行证), arranged by a licensed agency. Reaching Lhasa by rail needs the separate Tibet Travel Permit and an organised tour.

Since 20 November 2025 you can file the arrival card online via the National Immigration Administration's site, app or WeChat/Alipay mini-programme. If you are not in a hotel, register your address at the local police station within 24 hours.

When to Go, Month by Month

Qinghai sits above 2,200 m everywhere and above 3,000 m on the lake plateau. Xining averages -6.5 °C in January and 17.7 °C in July, with about 2,680 sunshine hours a year.

Timing tip

National Day week (1-7 October) is the busiest period. Aim for the second half of October: golden grass, snow on the peaks, lower tickets, quiet roads. Some lakeside services close from early November.

Xining: Kumbum Monastery and Plateau Food

Give Xining a full day. It is a city of Hui, Tibetan, Mongol and Han communities, and its food justifies the stop on its own.

Kumbum (Ta'er) Monastery 塔尔寺

Twenty-five kilometres southwest of the city, Kumbum is one of the six great monasteries of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism and the birthplace of Tsongkhapa. Its "three wonders" — butter sculptures (酥油花), murals (壁画) and appliqué embroidery (堆绣) — justify the detour.

DetailWhat to expect
TicketAbout ¥70 peak season (May-October), ¥40 off-season; discounts with student/senior ID

Time needed2-3 hours
AccessLocal buses to Ta'er Monastery (the 909/914 routes), or ~45 minutes by taxi or ride-hailing
EtiquetteCover shoulders and knees, remove hats indoors, no photography of the butter sculptures

What to eat

Across the border in Gansu lies the region's other obsession — see our Lanzhou beef noodle guide. The Qinghai Provincial Museum is free and, from 10 October 2026, drops advance booking on a trial basis: a good primer on Tibetan, Tu and Salar cultures.

Qinghai Lake 青海湖: Tickets and Closed Zones

China's largest lake, and its largest saltwater lake: about 4,300 km² of water at 3,196 m, averaging 21 m deep with salinity around 1.24%, ringed by some 360 km of road. Tibetans call it Tso Ngonbo, the blue sea, and pilgrims circle it clockwise.

SiteTicket (2026)Notes
Erlangjian (二郎剑)~¥90-100 peak (April-October), ¥50 low seasonCore developed area, 136 km from Xining; boats ¥100-180 extra; allow 3-4 hours
Bird Island (鸟岛)—Closed for conservation; birds remain visible from the road and approved viewpoints
Sand Island (沙岛)—Also closed at the time of writing
Lakeside eco-viewpointsoften ¥30-60Twelve community-run viewpoints on a government-plus-village model that returns dividends to herders

Prices are in flux

In August 2026 the provincial development and reform commission held a hearing on cutting Qinghai Lake tickets, proposing to reduce the scenic area's average from about ¥58 to ¥48. Expect the ranges above until the change is published, and check official channels rather than roadside touts.

Where to stop on the ring

Skip Jinyintan Atomic City on the north shore — it is restricted for foreign visitors. In winter the lake freezes from around December, sometimes for months, with ice thick enough for vehicles in places: spectacular, austere and half-price.

Chaka Salt Lake 茶卡盐湖: The "Mirror of the Sky"

Almost 300 km west of Xining, at the eastern gate of the Qaidam Basin, Chaka is the shallow brine lake that became famous as China's "Mirror of the Sky" (天空之镜) — a few centimetres of water over salt crust, reflecting clouds and snow peaks like glass.

How to do Chaka properly

  1. Check the weather, not the calendar. The mirror effect needs calm, bright conditions. A calm morning after rain gives the postcard; wind gives grey chop. Staying overnight in Chaka town buys you two chances at good light.
  2. Ride the train in, walk back. The line runs 5 km into the flat with six themed stops; the far end is best for reflections. Ride to the last stop, shoot, then walk the boardwalk back.
  3. Wear the shoe covers (¥10 plus deposit) — brine destroys shoes, and the crust is fragile. Stay on boardwalks in areas fenced off for salt harvesting.
  4. Respect a working lake. Chaka still produces "big blue salt" (大青盐) harvested here for centuries. Buy edible salt at the shop rather than pocketing crystals.
  5. Manage altitude. At 3,059 m this is often a first plateau stop; there are oxygen stations at the train stops. Move slowly, drink water, keep dinner light.

Tickets are ID-based, so carry your passport for offline purchase, and buy through the official channel rather than car-park touts.

Kanbula and the Autumn Window

Between late September and early November, add Kanbula National Forest Park (坎布拉) in Jianzha county: red Danxia cliffs dropping into the turquoise Yellow River reservoir, with forested slopes above. The provincial culture and tourism department flagged Kanbula as reaching its autumn peak on 8 October 2026, and it is the easiest add-on to a Xining base. Other seasonal options: Menyuan (门源) for July’s rapeseed bloom and Tongren (同仁) for Regong thangka painting.

Three Itineraries, 3 to 10 Days

3 days: the essentials

  1. Day 1 — Arrive Xining; Kumbum Monastery in the morning, Mojia Street food at night. Sleep at 2,250 m to acclimatise.
  2. Day 2 — Day tour to Qinghai Lake: Sun Moon Mountain, Erlangjian, then Heimahe for the night.
  3. Day 3 — Heimahe sunrise, west shore, Chaka Salt Lake in the afternoon; train or drive back to Xining.

5-7 days: adding the plateau's best

Overnight in Chaka, then loop back through Delingha or across to Kanbula and Tongren, finishing in the Qilian grasslands. Two nights at altitude make the trip far easier on the body, and you get time for a cycling stage along the lake's west shore.

9-10 days: the Gansu-Qinghai Grand Loop

The classic circuit, roughly 2,000 km from Xining into the Hexi Corridor:

Xining → Qinghai Lake → Chaka → Dachaidan / Delingha → Dunhuang → Jiayuguan → Zhangye → Qilian → Xining

Each leg has a guide on this site: start with the Hexi Corridor route guide, then the Dunhuang Mogao Caves guide, the Jiayuguan Great Wall guide and the Zhangye Danxia guide; our Silk Road guide covers the history of the whole route.

FAQ

Can foreigners visit Qinghai?

Yes. The standard itinerary — Xining, Kumbum, Qinghai Lake, Chaka, Kanbula, Qilian — needs no special permit. Only isolated sites are restricted (Jinyintan Atomic City, the Lenghu observatory, the Hoh Xil core zone), and remote Yushu or Guoluo trips may need a foreigner's travel permit arranged in advance.

Do I need a visa for Qinghai?

You need whatever document your nationality requires for China generally. Citizens of the 50 visa-free countries can visit on a 30-day visa-free stay. The 240-hour transit scheme does not include Qinghai, so do not build the province into a transit-permit itinerary.

What does Qinghai Lake cost?

Erlangjian charges roughly ¥90-100 in peak season (April-October) and ¥50 off-season, with boats ¥100-180 extra. In August 2026 the province proposed cutting the average ticket from ¥58 to ¥48; confirm locally. Community-run viewpoints typically charge ¥30-60.

How bad is the altitude?

Xining at 2,250 m is usually fine. Qinghai Lake (3,196 m) and Chaka (3,059 m) can bring headaches, breathlessness and poor sleep on the first night. Ascend gradually from Xining, hydrate, avoid alcohol and use the oxygen stations if needed; travellers with serious heart or lung conditions should see a doctor first.
