⚠️ What Just Happened

On August 20, 2026, China’s National Immigration Administration added Kyrgyzstan and Vietnam to Hainan’s 30-day visa-free entry policy. That takes the island’s exclusive visa-free list from 59 to 61 countries — and when you add citizens who qualify through China’s national mutual and unilateral visa-exemption agreements, a total of 88 countries can now enter Hainan without a visa. That makes Hainan the most visa-friendly destination in China, with up to 30 days on the island and no visa application, no fee, and no onward-ticket requirement.

Hainan is China’s southernmost province — a tropical island roughly the size of Belgium, famous for beaches, rainforest, seafood, and the country’s largest duty-free shopping scene. Since the free-trade-port customs closure in December 2025, it has doubled down on international visitors: in the first half of 2026, foreign arrivals jumped 33.2% year on year, with 93.8% of foreign tourists entering visa-free.

Who Can Enter Visa-Free: The 88 Countries

The headline number — 88 countries — is the combination of three overlapping layers of policy:

Because the three lists overlap, the 88 figure counts unique nationalities covered by at least one of them. Hainan’s own 61-country list breaks down like this:

Region Countries on Hainan’s 30-Day Visa-Free List
Europe (40) Russia, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Portugal, Greece, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania, Ukraine, Iceland, Monaco, Belarus
Americas (6) United States, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile
Asia-Pacific (13) Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Philippines, Indonesia, Brunei, United Arab Emirates, Qatar
New additions (2) Kyrgyzstan, Vietnam — added August 20, 2026

Not on the list? Check China’s national 30-day visa-free policy (which includes Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, Peru, and Uruguay on a trial basis through late 2026) or a mutual exemption. There are also group visa-free routes via Hong Kong or Macau tour groups and cruise-ship entry. If you can visit China at all, Hainan is almost certainly your easiest door in.

Which Visa-Free Policy Should You Use?

Many travelers now have a genuine choice between three visa-free programs. Picking the right one matters, because they have different rules:

Program Stay Where you can go Requirement
National 30-day visa-free Up to 30 days All of mainland China Passport of one of ~50 eligible countries
240-hour transit visa-free Up to 10 days 24 provincial regions, 65 ports Confirmed onward ticket to a third country
Hainan 30-day visa-free Up to 30 days Hainan province only Passport of one of 61 countries; no onward ticket

✅ How to Choose

If your country is on the national 30-day list, use that policy — it lets you leave Hainan and explore the rest of China. If you qualify for the 240-hour transit program, you can combine 10 days on the mainland with a Hainan beach break on the same trip. If you want a full 30 days of island life — or your country (like the US, Mexico, Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, or Indonesia) is on Hainan’s list but not the national one — the Hainan 30-day policy is your best option.

One more thing: the Hainan 30-day program and the 240-hour transit expansion announced August 20 are separate schemes — you choose one at entry and must stick to its rules.

Entry Ports & How It Works at the Airport

You can enter Hainan visa-free through any of the island’s open ports:

Hainan now has 78 international routes to 45 cities across 25 countries — including China’s first “seventh-freedom” route (Prague–Sanya) and a new Madrid–Haikou service. No direct flight? Fly via Hong Kong, Singapore, or another hub; as long as you arrive in Hainan on an international flight, the policy applies.

1
Fly in from abroad. Book a flight to Haikou, Sanya, or Boao from anywhere outside mainland China. Have your passport and return/onward ticket ready (airlines usually check both before boarding).
2
Join the visa-free lane at immigration. No pre-application and nothing to fill in online — you declare your visit on the spot.
3
Present your passport. The officer checks your nationality against the eligible list and stamps you in.
4
Note your 30-day window. The clock starts at 00:00 the day after you arrive. Enter on the 1st, and your 30 days run through the end of the 30th day after that.
5
Leave from any Hainan port. Exit via any open airport or seaport. Overstaying, even briefly, brings fines and can complicate future China trips.

Most travelers report the whole arrival process takes 10–20 minutes at Sanya and Haikou airports. If your plans change and you need to stay longer or continue to the mainland, apply before your visa-free period expires at the Exit-Entry Administration Bureau of Hainan’s Public Security Department — extensions are discretionary, so build your itinerary with a buffer.

The Rules You Must Not Break

⚠️ Hainan-Only, No Exceptions

Under the 30-day visa-free policy you may only travel within Hainan province. You cannot take the ferry or a flight to Guangdong, Hong Kong, or anywhere else on the mainland without first obtaining a visa or stay permit from the local exit-entry administration. This is the single most common reason visa-free visitors run into trouble.

  1. Register your accommodation within 24 hours. Hotels register you automatically at check-in. If you stay in a private home or rental, you (or your host) must register online via the “Haiyiban” app or at the local police station within 24 hours. Failure to register can mean a warning or a fine of up to ¥2,000.
  2. No work, no study, no journalism. The policy covers tourism, business, family visits, medical care, exhibitions, and sports. Employment, enrolling in a course, and media work need a proper visa obtained before you fly.
  3. Don’t overstay. Overstaying is treated seriously: fines start around ¥500 per day (capped at ¥10,000) and can escalate to detention. Set a reminder a few days before your 30-day window ends.
  4. Carry your passport. Police spot-check tourist areas and train stations — keep the physical document, not just a phone photo.

Duty-Free Shopping: The ¥100,000 Tax-Free Allowance

For many visitors, the real reason to come to Hainan is the shopping. Hainan is the only place in China with an island-wide duty-free (离岛免税) system, and it keeps getting more generous. Since the latest reform took effect on November 1, 2025:

Practical shopping details:

In the first half of 2026 alone, duty-free sales on Hainan reached ¥19.9 billion, up nearly 19% year on year. For a deeper dive into taxes and refunds across China, see our shopping & tax refund guide.

What to Do in Hainan

Thirty days is a lot of island, and Hainan packs more variety than most visitors expect. The island’s high-speed rail loop connects all the major towns — Haikou to Sanya takes about 1.5–2 hours — so base yourself in two or three spots and explore by train.

Sample Itineraries

7-Day Classic: Sanya + Haikou

Days 1–4: Sanya — Yalong Bay, Wuzhizhou snorkeling, duty-free shopping. Day 5: high-speed rail to Haikou. Days 5–7: Qilou Old Street, laobaicha, volcano park, seafood dinner — fly home from Haikou.

10-Day Island Loop

Haikou → Wenchang (rockets, coconut groves) → Qionghai/Bo’ao → Wanning (surfing at Riyue Bay) → Sanya (beaches, rainforest, duty-free) — all connected by the island’s high-speed rail loop.

30-Day Slow Travel (Visa-Free Maximum)

Split your month roughly 10 days in Sanya, 7 in Haikou, 5 in Wenchang, 4 in Wanning, and 4 in Qionghai — with day trips west to Danzhou and Dongfang. Learn laobaicha culture, eat your way through the seafood markets, and use your duty-free quota well.

Family Trip: 8 Days

Sanya is the family hub: Atlantis water park, Wuzhizhou boat rides, gentle rainforest trails, and resort pools everywhere. Add 2 nights in Haikou for the volcano park and a qingbuliang cooking class. Resorts have kids’ clubs, and English is widely spoken.

When to Go & Practical Tips

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Hainan visa-free for US citizens in 2026?

Yes. The US is on Hainan’s 61-country list: up to 30 days visa-free for tourism, business, and family visits. The US is not on the national 30-day list, so you must stay on the island — apply for a visa first if you plan to visit the mainland.

Can I enter Hainan visa-free and then go to Beijing or Hong Kong?

Not without a visa or stay permit. The policy restricts you to Hainan. To continue to the mainland, apply at Hainan’s Exit-Entry Administration before your period ends. For a multi-city trip, use the 240-hour transit or national 30-day program from the start if you qualify.

Do I need to register with a travel agency before flying?

No. Since 2018 the policy allows individual entry with no pre-registration — just present your passport at an open port. (Some older websites still describe the pre-2018 group process; it no longer applies.)

How many countries can enter Hainan visa-free now?

61 countries under Hainan’s own 30-day policy (as of August 20, 2026), and 88 countries in total when you add citizens covered by China’s national unilateral and mutual visa-exemption policies.

Can I work remotely from Hainan on the visa-free policy?

Tourism, business, visits, and family purposes are fine — answering emails on holiday is not a problem. Local employment or long-term study require a proper visa.

What happens if I overstay my 30 days?

Overstays are fined (typically ¥500 per day, up to ¥10,000) and can lead to detention and entry blacklists. Need more time? Apply for an extension before your period expires — don’t ignore the date.

Is the duty-free allowance really ¥100,000?

Yes — ¥100,000 (approximately US$14,000) per person per calendar year, unlimited transactions, across all Hainan duty-free stores. International passengers leaving China count toward the same quota, and per-transaction caps apply to cosmetics, phones, alcohol, and drones.
