Why You Need Mobile Payment in China
In 2025, over 92% of consumer transactions in China were mobile. From ordering street food to booking train tickets, QR codes rule everything. Many places no longer accept cash — and those that do often can't give change.
The two payment apps you need: Alipay (支付宝) and WeChat Pay (微信支付). Both now support international credit cards.
Option 1: Alipay (Recommended)
Alipay has the smoothest foreigner experience. You can link Visa, Mastercard, Amex, and even some regional cards.
Step 1: Download Alipay
Get it from your app store (iOS App Store / Google Play). Search "Alipay" — the blue icon with the white "支" character. Make sure you get the international version, not AlipayHK.
Step 2: Sign Up with Your Phone Number
Enter your home country phone number. Alipay will send a verification code via SMS. Pro tip: Use the same number you'll have in China. If you plan to get a Chinese SIM, add it after arrival.
Step 3: Verify Your Identity (Passport)
Go to Me → Settings → Account & Security → Identity Verification. Choose "Foreign Passport" and upload your passport photo page. Facial recognition scan required. Make sure you're in good lighting!
Step 4: Add Your International Card
Go to Me → Bank Cards → Add Card. Enter your card details. Most Visa/Mastercard/Amex cards work. You may get a $0.01 test charge that reverses immediately.
Step 5: Start Paying — Two Ways
- Scan merchant's QR: Tap "Scan" on the home screen → point at merchant's QR code → enter amount → confirm
- Show your QR: Tap "Pay" on the home screen → show your barcode → merchant scans it → done
Option 2: WeChat Pay
WeChat Pay works but has a trickier setup for foreigners. You'll need a WeChat account (not blocked, not too new) and verification can fail without explanation.
Step 1: Download WeChat
Same deal — app store. Green icon with two white speech bubbles. Create an account with your phone number.
Step 2: Enable WeChat Pay (Wallet)
Go to Me → Services → Wallet → Cards → Add Card. You'll be asked to verify identity (passport upload + facial scan). This is where many get stuck — be patient, try during China business hours (GMT+8).
Step 3: Link International Card
Once verified, add your Visa/Mastercard. Note: WeChat Pay charges a 3% fee on international card transactions above ¥200, while Alipay charges 3% on ALL international card transactions.
Alternative: Cash + Change
Carry ¥500-1000 in cash as backup. ATMs at major banks (ICBC, Bank of China) accept foreign cards. But you'll need cash for small purchases where QR isn't working.
Common Problems & Solutions
"Foreign card not accepted" error
Some smaller mobile vendors don't accept international cards even through Alipay. Solution: Use TourPass balance instead, or carry cash.
"Identity verification failed"
Most common issue. Solutions: (1) Take passport photo in bright natural light, flat on dark surface (2) Ensure passport name matches card name exactly (3) Try during China business hours (9AM-6PM GMT+8).
No internet? No payment.
Mobile payment requires data. Get an eSIM before you fly (Airalo, Holafly) or a Chinese SIM on arrival. VPN is essential for accessing non-Chinese apps (see our VPN Guide).
